| In all my years of school, we never once were required to shower. I remember one or two girls taking showers now and then but that was it. We were never given time to shower even if we wanted to, which I didn't. [ADPLACEMENT]1.0[/ADPLACEMENT]

What I'd do is call the school, and ask. Then, at least you know what you're up against. If they say, yes; perhaps a note from you would do the trick. If not, if you could get your family Dr. to write one, I believe that they have to honor those. From my experience in High School, and this is little old CT, and it's a very small town, everyone was supposed to take a shower after gym class, which was twice a week, but it really wasn't enforced as they didn't give us time to take one - our gym teacher used to let us out of the class itself with less then 5 minutes before the next class began. In any case, don't keep worrying until you find out for sure, chances are, as it sounds like he didn't have to take them in Junior High, he won't in High School, but it's best to make sure. Let us know how you make out, and good luck to you! Kat ;)

| Re: Are showers still mandatory in high school? I don't see the problem of taking a shower at school. Should make your personality grow as well :D

| Re: Are showers still mandatory in high school? When I was in high school showers were not mandatory, but if you wanted to take one you were more then welcome to. We had a big room with about 8 or 10 different shower heads. Our problem was our gym teacher didn't realease us until like 5 mins before we were suppose to leave for our next class so no one really had time to take a shower. I graduated in 1997. When I was in the military the women had roughly one hour to get showered, dressed, bunks made and out to formation for breakfast. We had private showers but they didn't have a shower curtain to give you your privacy. If I remember correctly also the individual toilet stalls didn't have doors on them either so someone could walk right into the large bathroom and walk past you while you were going to the bathroom.

I am in southern California and 20 years ago we were not required to take a shower after gym. It was optional. It could have changed by now tho. Like someone else said, just call the school and they can tell you. Where are you in Socal? I'm in Westminster.

| Re: Are showers still mandatory in high school? We were given "points" if we took a shower, teacher would check our hair, etc. It was creepy. There were like 20 shower heads in the bathroom and 20 girls, then when we finished, the boys would get to take theirs. Lord knows how many diseases were shared. I just used to go in, get wet, run back out. Oh, and my PE teacher's name was Mrs. Hurt. That helped a lot too. :) |

| Re: Are showers still mandatory in high school? LOL! Wow, the difference in opinions on this is amazing. As to girls showering and they they don't want to do so, all I am going to ask is, anyone watched the original edition of the Stephen King movie Carrie or read the book? Every young girls nightmare. I WOULD NOT HAVE SHOWERED WITH MY CLASSMATES! No way in the world. I graduated in 1989, too, and it was not mandatory for us either, though we did have showers there, we had to change clothes for gym, you were not allowed to participate if you didn't bring something to change into, it didn't have to be uniform, they were optional, but you had to at least have t-shirt and shorts with sneakers, or sweatsuits, then change back to your regular clothes. I know the sports teams always used them after workouts, practices, and games, but I don't remember anyone in any of my gym classes ever using them. We never had the time either, they didn't end our gym class until 7 minutes before the end bell, they ran some time tests and figured that was the length of time it took to change clothes before the bell that signaled the end of class and then you had 3 minutes, no more, to get to your next class! So they sure didn't give us time for a shower. |

| Re: Are showers still mandatory in high school? It was mandatory in my hs I graduated in '92 We all had a number and the gym teacher stood right by the showers with her notebook and as you called your number she eyed you up and down than checked you off. We always kept our bras and underwear on and just wet our arms and legs. It was silly really. We also had to change for gym. If you didnt have gym clothes (no matter what you were wearing in class) you couldn't participate and got a zero. |

| Re: Are showers still mandatory in high school? The practice of showering as a group after Phys Ed in school has diminished for both sexes, but many young people today don't recognize just how different our attitudes were back in a time when fitting into a common set of rules for all was more prevalent. When I attended Junior High and High School during the early- and mid-1960's, showers were mandatory almost everywhere for the boys. Girls often got the benefit of an enclosure, however, and the requirement was sometimes waived entirely. (As an aside, I knew of some older friends who grew up in a rural area where a new high school with showers was constructed during the 1930's; at the time, some of these ladies welcomed the school showers as a big improvement over primitive plumbing at home.) And as another example, it might suprise some of the younger members to learn that YMCA's sometimes encouraged all-male groups to swim completely nude; the practice began to die out around 1965, but some older buildings could not be converted (Birmingham, Ala. permitted it until 1983). In my own case, I had undergone a spinal fusion that left me with a noticeable deformity in my torso, and this, combined with being a very "late bloomer" sexually, led to a lot of locker room humiliation, not to mention the stigma of always being the last picked for competitive activity. But the story took a turn for the better when I entered college and was enrolled in a mandatory swimming course. With the "dumb bully/gangster" element no longer present, the class turned into a supportive atmosphere, and I was able, for the first time, to master a physical challenge, and without clothes, at that. My point here is that, as every sensitive Phys Ed instructor knows, insecurity, followed by bonding, is a part of every adolescent male's experience, and nudity simply adds more to the mix. In my own case, this worked out very much for the better over the long run, but that isn't always so. However, the current culture, in which many of our young men are raised by single moms, has risks of its own. I've witnessed a growing number of "she-males", conditioned to view their bodies not as tools to be developed and conserved (even when flawed), but as depreciating assets or bargaining chips. And that is in no way a healthy attitude. |
