Was I too harsh?

This is an email I sent to the General office of a hotel I stayed at recently. Now that I am rereading it I feel like I was too harsh, what do you think?

I stayed at this hotel 2 nights. I was attending soccer
tournaments that we do there every year, and orignally planned to have our
group all stay at this hotel next year, and every year after. This will
not be happening. There was a nice little gal who helped me make my dirty
bed, that was the best thing that happened there. That night when I went to
bed the sheets were gritty. In the morning when we woke up there were
little flies all over the bathroom floor. We just brushed them off our feet
, kept our shoes on, and continued our day. Throughout that day I began
finding and killing black beetles that seemed to infest the bathroom.
Late that afternoon I saw not one, but TWO red centipedes that lived in the
rubber seal around the tub. I called the front desk, and was told "Sorry,
there is nothing we can do about it. The exterminator can not be reached
on the weekend, and we don't even have bug spray." This is word for word.
The hotel was packed, there was no offer to have me change rooms, or clean
the floor that had about 30 dead teeny flies on it. At that point even
windex would have been acceptable. Or a broom. I could not take a shower.
We asked for new sheets, because the previous night the sheets seemed
gritty. The problem may have been that the floor was not vacuumed, as my
daughter and I had to brush off our feet every time we got into bed. Then,
being paranoid we had to look at each piece of dirt we did find in the bed.
We did find a horse fly that was embedded into the blanket. The next
morning we could not bring ourselves to even brush our teeth, as the sink
was filled with 20 more teeny dead flies. I have no idea where these bugs
came from. We even left our window sealed. When we checked out I talked
with the gal at the front desk, and the woman informed me that it was her I
had talked with the previous day. She explained that they had been just
too busy to help me. She then tried to express doubt about the bug problem,
until I assured her that I had left all the little buggy corpses on the
floor, for just that reason. She gave me one night free. I am still
creeping out, feeling like I am crawling from that horrible weekend. I
have stayed in hundreds of hotels in my travels across the US,(including
many ********'s), and I have never been in one that was dirtier, and more
disgusting. The continental breakfast they offered was a few paltry slices
of white bread drying out in a basket, some jelly, as well as beverages. As
a final complaint, they have smoking and nonsmoking rooms on the same floor,
sometimes right across the hall from each other. My daughter woke up
several times through out the night because she thought the hotel was on
fire, the smell was so strong. I only hope I didn't come home with lice.
Thank you for letting you know about this hotels performance.

Baffled

I think that email should have been more harsh! There is no reason why anyone should have to put up with that kind of ickyness!

Thank goodness you didn't have a blacklight with you, who knows what you would have found!

I don't think you were too harsh. Your valid complaints were not acted upon, making your stay unhealthy and unenjoyable. Maybe nothing will come of it, but if you don't tell management, things won't ever change. And, besides, it probably made you feel better getting the frustration off your chest. ;)

Not too harsh at all. Check out www.planetfeedback.com and www.mythreecents.com for some interesting letters and complaints.

My only comment: You should have asked for SOMETHING at the end of the letter. The best complaint letters supposedly are those that ask for something. What do you want done?

When my DH wrote Volkswagen after the zillionith time taking it to the shop (I always joke that VW is German for "piece of crap") he asked for new engine or a new car. They gave us the new engine.

mayfly, not too harsh at all, you poor thing. How horrible! May I ask, was this a well known hotel? I had an experience in a NY City hotel once, cockroaches hatching in the bathroom. They sprayed, but gave me another room 'cause I could not stand the smell of the spray. The Board of Health should shut that place down. I'd report them.

8o What a horrible experience. I feel crawly just reading it! You were definitely not too harsh; in fact, you weren't harsh enough. I would report them to as many places as possible and for sure be compensated in some way, but probably not a free room.;)

Harsh?? Not at all. I thought you were very polite about it. Much more polite than I would have been!!

A Loooooong time ago ( It was the summer between 4th & 5th grade), my family went to Florida. The hotel we stayed at our first night was disguisting - almost as bad at the one you just described. There were roaches on the floors, the room was suppose to be non-smoking but it wreaked of cigarette smoke, the room was filthy and the floor looked as if it hadn't been vacuumed in years. They also had a pool, but my sister and I refused to go in it. The water was all murky and nasty looking. So the next day, my mother let the manager have it and we checked into the hotel that was right next door.

Thank you soo much, I feel better. I was worried I was being prissy or something. If we could have left, we would have, but all the hotels were booked!

I am still worried about the lice! How do you know if you have it? Ughhhh! I have made my dh look a few times.

LOL

I'm laughing because I worry about the same thing every time we stay in hotel/motel. I have never had lice but I still worry about it.
I think they say about a week?

I know when I was working at a Crisis Center a family came in that had them and I had helped load them in a taxi to go to the shelter. I freaked. My clothes went into a large plastic bag, tied up for two weeks. Colored my hair as soon as I got home. Figured they couldnt live through that.

Don't worry.

Eeeeeks...you're far from being 'prissy'! I can't think of anyone in their right mind that would have semi "at home" in that room. UGH UGH UGH! I think your letter could have easily handled more "harshness"....not that it always works in your favor tho..LOL!

Hmmm...about the lice...I have never seen it, but from what I have been told is that you look for little 'specks' that are REALLY attached to hair. I'm sure you all have "just" the itchies...sorta like when you spot a flea...you instantly feel them crawling on ya.
