Question Should a Death Row Inmate Get an Organ Transplant?

Check this out:

http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/L27117955.htm

Now, I don't want to turn this into a pro/con debate over the death penalty. However, if the state is going to execute this man anyway, why on earth are they even considering giving him an organ that so many other people desperately need??? I don't think this should be a question of money for the state, it's a complete waste of the organ. What are your thoughts?

I'll bite...

A life is a life... my personal belief.

If the person is "eligible" to be put on the transplant list, meets any/all requirements just like everyone else on the list... then list them. It would not be "Justice" for them to be withheld the chance of a transplant. And due to the fact that the waiting lists are so long, the chance that you will actually get a match, etc.. Their time may be up before they ever find a matching donor...

From the article:
"... Reyes-Camarena says he will not ask for the operation but would accept it.

"If they offer it to me, I'll take it but I never want to ask for a kidney," Reyes-Camarena told Reuters by telephone. "I'm on death row now. Someday, if it got allowed, I'm going to go through appeals and then the man (executioner) has to do his job. Why take it with me?" he said..."

What is "eligible" really? I mean, being on death row wouldn't hinder his chance? I think it's pretty goofy myself. I say give the man that didn't decapitate, rape, molest, kill, etc...the needed organ...someone who IS a productive law-abiding citizen. ..not to someone who is obviously the opposite. Ummm..JMO of course.

The most they deserve is to be put at the bottom of the donor list.

I can't believe they are trying to justify giving this guy a kidney to save the state money. Make him or his family pay for it like any other family would have to do. Geesh...it almost pays to go to jail and have everything paid for you. (joking)

Does it really cost $120,000 a year for dialysis for the average person? I've never known anyone that is going through that.

Well, on one hand - Nobody deserves to suffer and if this transplant will end his suffering, then Yes. He should get the transplant. I guess I could see saying no if he only had a few weeks to a month or so left on death row, but some people sit on death row for 10, 20 or more years.
Which brings me to another question - once he's been executed, would the organs still be good to donate? Can you donate an organ more than once? I dunno....

Ok, now, back to answering the question...
On the other hand, this guy is going to die anyway, WHY?? Why waste the organ on him?

I guess I'm on the fence with this one....

I say NO!

Do you people realize that people who have lived "normal" lives and have been "good" their entire lives are TURNED DOWN for transplants each day ----- because they can't afford it!

I don't care what anyone says.. it's a reality.

When my mother had to undergo her 3 days of evaluations to determine if she qualified for the list.. one of the things was the finance people from the hospital came in to make sure we could pay for it... if not.. too bad, so sad.

So, not only are we as taxpayers paying to house, feed and clothe the criminals in society.. but we should then afford them the right to an organ that is already in desperate need by thousands of others who have lived a rightful life but who just can't afford it? **** NO!

I agree with Naomi & Jennifer!!!

I don't understand why I have to pay for a death row inmate to have a transplant when there are plenty of people out there who can't afford or don't qualify for medical insurance that can't afford it, but because he/she committed a heinuos act they get it FREE!?!?!?! What's wrong with that picture????

I don't think so!!!

I say no. I even agree with the suffer part. Its heinous that good people get turned down because of lack of money. They are suffering.........

People who do evil to others and are convicted, and sentenced to a death sentence should not qualify because Of Money.

My first thought to this question was an immediate NO. But then I started to think "what is this happens to be a person who eventually gets a re-trial or gets a pardon." So I guess I am on the fence on this too.
