Confused about coupon trading....

How do you know what coupons you want to trade for if you don't know what is coming up on sale? Are you all trading coupons for things you normally use?

I don't know what I want to trade for because I don't know what I want until I see an ad. But by the time I see the coupon trade, the sale would be over. Am I doing this all wrong?

Aren't there certain products you always buy? With me I always buy diet coke, Iams canned dog food, Eukanuba dry dog food. So I'm always looking for coupons for those products. When there are coupons availabe I stock up on these products.

Ohhhh....ok...I get it now, Hattie. Thank you!

I guess I must be a little different in what I buy then. I don't really have anything that I normally buy except maybe Electrasol and Aleve. I like variety in our meals and buy whatever looks good or is on sale. I thought all the coupon trading was for things that you saw on sale and was wanting coupons for. But I couldn't figure out how you were getting them so quickly to be able to use them before the sales ran out. It wasn't like that at all. You all are trading for things you normally use. Man...that was blowing my mind trying to find out how you were getting coupons so quickly for things that were on sale. Thanks for clearing that up. I'll catch on sooner or later...lol

Some people do that, too. On other boards people sometimes post sales a few days in advance. With that info, you can then create an ISO list or find someone who's selling them. I've never traded before, but I have been given coupons that did get to me before the sale ended.
I usually don't buy the same things, either, so that's why I haven't traded.

Also, sale or no sale, if you can double sometimes a coupon appears that will make an item free.. THAT's the one you want lots of.. that's called a 'hot" coupon.

After awhile you don't buy "This week's groceries..but rather you buy in "lumps" and build a stockpile.

Like today in my paper is a 50/1 Bisquick complete. I can double that and get a free pouche of Bisquick complete. I already have 10 pouches in the cupboard..but free is a good price so I'll pick up another free one next time at the store. If you can double 50¢ and know you are boing to make a lot of bisquits this winter..it's cool to trade for as many of these coupons as you think you might need for biscuts during the winter and buy them all for free right now and have them 'stockpiled" for the winter.

I just traded for a bunch of $1 off Reynold clear Plastic wrap because my store has UNadvertised sale making them free with this coupon..I have to keep hopeing the sale will still be there when my coupons arrive ...but if it's not.. then all I have to do is use a couple coupons before they expire and at least that way I get my cost of the trade back. Clear plastic wrap is one thing I do always use.

I usually do my trades for items that I know we will use or eat if it makes it a good deal. I know most of my stores prices so I can tell if a coupon will give it to me for free or pennies and if so I will trade for them. Like you, we are not brand picky on most items and will eat a variety of whatever can be gotten cheapest with sales. For a lot of trades I will also stick with favorite items, like Planters nuts, we love them but they are expensive so when the coupons came out a month or so ago, I traded for extras and whenever I go shopping I can stock up at a cheaper price and know they will never go to waste here.
Since we have no way of knowing too far ahead of time what will be on sale, I keep my trades down to items I can get at good prices with coupons without a sale like I said above or those favorite items we can't afford to buy all the time at regular price.
For other items I just pick up several copies of the paper each Sunday so I have more than copy of a coupon and if a sale comes along that makes it free or a super deal then I have at least a couple to use.
