Are you prepared for retirement?

If you own a very small business, the answer likely is "no." Most owners of a "micro-business" -- a company with 10 or fewer employees -- are not saving enough for retirement, according to the nonprofit National Association for the Self-Employed.

In a poll of its members, NASE found that nearly a third of respondents -- 28.4 percent -- have no retirement savings, and about a quarter have saved less than $15,000.

Only 7.5 percent of respondents are very confident about retirement, while 56.6 percent are not very or not at all confident.

"Retirement savings often have to take a back seat to other pressing micro-business costs," NASE President Robert Hughes said.

Certified financial planner Robert Dufresne of Haines City said owners should incorporate life planning into any annual business plan or review.

"They need to ask questions like, 'When would I like to retire? What do I want my retirement to be? How much wealth do I need to be able to not need this business any more? What would I do if this business failed?' "

One thing owners should not do is count on selling their business to fund their retirement, Dufresne said. That could leave them without a safety net should market conditions change.

"It is only prudent to prepare for the lean times during the good times. Time is critical. The longer you have, the easier financial security is to obtain," Dufresne said.
