I have tried the sweepstakes sites and I think they are a ripoff.

Re: are the surveys that ask you to pay worth it?

Thanks, Tony - I didn't know there was a site that listed scam surveys.

Personally, I think they're all scams!!!!! And especially if they want YOU to pay THEM!

Re: are the surveys that ask you to pay worth it?

Definately not. I was debating this myself, a few days ago. I am signed up for paid survey sites that do actually pay out (and never asked for money), and I decided to check out some more. I found one that wants me to do free trials and evaluate them. However some of those free trials put $1.00 or more charge on your credit card. The site says they will reimburse me, but I don't know if I can trust them or not, so I'll just stick to the sites I know.

Re: are the surveys that ask you to pay worth it?

Most free trials of anything, will put $1 or more on your CC or DC. They have to use something to authorize and make sure it is a valid card, in case you keep the service. The $1 charges should drop off within 7days, and if they don't, you can notify your CC or DC company and they will handle the problem. You will even see those if you use your CC or DC at most gas stations to pay at the pump, since they can't foresee the amount you are going to use and they have you swipe your card first, you will usually see at least a $1 charge, then another one for the actual amount of your purchase, and the $1 one just drops off later, some companies also just subtract $1 from your purchase total, instead of cancelling that transaction.

It is better than what some companies used to do to people, until they got sued and paid a bunch of fines and such, a few gas stations and convenience stores, or online trial offerers used to put humongous authorization amounts on someone's card, many times putting them over the limit and/or causing them extreme hassles until it fell off in a week and the correct amoung was debited. They claimed they had to do it that way, as they had to make sure that no matter how big a purchase someone made it would be covered, and the transaction wouldn't be denied later so they would lose their money. YEAH RIGHT! Anyway, a new law was made to stop those practices.

Anyway, as to survey sites where you have to pay to join on the theory that they will then pay you, I can answer that question.

I have been working here at DOD since 1999, just a few weeks after the site first launched, almost 7 years now, I have also regularly used various other sites to freebie hunt, do coupon swaps, save money, and make money. I started my freebie/cheap hunting way back in the fall of 1999 when we bought our first computer, and I have yet to ever hear of anyone making good money on them. I have read posts and warnings from many, many people who wasted their money on scams though, because they paid their membership fees, but then of course, never "qualified" for any of the surveys to make money.

Think about it logically, if it really was legit and people really made a lot of money at these types of sites, wouldn't people be bragging about it and posting about it everywhere online? I mean, people would be posting for referrals, they would want to get their friends and family in on them to make money and share the benefits as well. However, except for the occasional desperate spammer, you don't see those types of posts, so I think that should answer your question right there.

I used to wonder about those types of site, too. But then when I thought about it and realized that in all the time I have been online, especially here at a big, popular deals site, someone would have tried them and been posting about their fortuitous discovery by now.

Are surveys really worth it?

I'm one of those people that just figure everything is a scam. But seeing all this stuff on here makes me wonder if I am missing something. I see a lot of places enter you in a contest for completing a survey. Is it really worth the time and effort? I'm not looking to make big bucks here. A freebie here and there would be great but I don't want to fill out several surveys just hoping to win a prize. Is this how most work? Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
~Michelle~

Re: Are surveys really worth it?

I have found that if you select the right kind of surveys that they do pay off over time. I usually look for the ones posted by members with a lot of posts, good rep. The freebies forum is great. I always look on walmart.com daily. They send them about a week after you order them. If you have a way to do autofill it takes some of the time out of the process.

Re: Are surveys really worth it?

I don't bother with too many of the surveys that just enter you in a sweepstakes. I do the surveys that offer points ( to save up for gift cards or merchandise) amazon gift certificates or cash. A few I can think of off the top of my head are:

[Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] - cash

Re: Are surveys really worth it?

I agree with hattielee I want to know that if I take the time to participate in a program of any kind that I will receive some type of reward even if it takes more than once to earn my prizes.

BTW hattielee thanks for sharing the links I will check them out myself, never can get too many gift cards!
