Unhappy Why do people bid on Ebay and then not follow auction terms?

It's a retorical question, and I'm just venting, but why do people bid on Ebay and then pay absolutely no attention to the terms of the auction? It seems like it has really gotten bad lately. I had one lady tell me that the auction was not important because she just bids for fun. I guess I should consider it fun, but when it costs me money to list items and the bidder doesn't pay, it ceases to be amusing. I give bidders ten days to pay for the item, which is plenty if you mail a payment in a timely manner. How about the bidders who tell you they don't get paid for a week and will send the payment then? Or the bidder who ignores all emails until you tell them they have to contact you or the auction will be terminated, then they tell you that they will send payment out in a few days, when it has already been over a week since the auction ended. I see more and more sellers with very strict terms on their auctions, which leads me to believe they have had problems too. How about it Ebay sellers, are my problems isolated incidents, or are you having problems too?

As a seller, I haven't really noticed an increase in the problems, I've always had a number of deadbeat bidders and other miscellaneous problems. The owners of the site aren't really interested in helping the users (my opinion) and people are really afraid of leaving negative feedback because of retalitory negatives. Feedback is not very helpful for this reason. Too many "false positives".

As a buyer, I have noticed more stringent seller restrictions. The "Great Paypal debate" being one of them...Also, what used to be "payment to be received within 10 days" has become "payment must be received within 3 (or 5) days after auction ends", but then the sellers don't contact you for several days with their info. Also as a buyer I HATE CHECKOUT!!! I have never had this puppy work right ONCE for me.

While I love the site, it really is a gamble for buyers and sellers. It only takes a few bad apples to ruin things and unfortunately, because of the way the internet is, the anonymous nature makes it a natural place for frauds to take place.

So, when I recommned the site to others, I always tell them not to risk more than they are willing to lose. As a buyer, you have to trust your seller and as a seller, at least if you don't get paid, you still have the item to sell again!

Please dont even get me started on people who cant seem to read at eBay!

Over the past two weeks, I've had 50+ auctions up on eBay. ALL of my auctions clearly state in THREE places that I do NOT accept PayPal, personal checks or stamps for payment (yep.. someone once wanted to pay in postage stamps ). I do accept c2it, eBay Payments, Yahoo Direct and money orders. Enough choices so that you can find something that works for you - and my sales have not suffered at all (actually, they're better now then when I only took PayPal & money orders). And, again at checkout, I remind people of their choices and that there is NO PAYPAL OR PERSONAL CHECKS ACCEPTED (yes, it's all in caps there too )

Today I notice that one person seems to be having problems with the eBay checkout - she gets as far as the payment screen, and then quits. I get one notice from eBay that she has started but not finished check out, then a second and finally a third.

Ok... so I think maybe I should email her to see if I could just send her an invoice from whichever service she wants to use or if she's trying to tell me that she's sending a money order and having problems. But, before I can do that, I see that the buyer has decided to email me.

So, I open up the email & she says "I've been trying to check out but I can't find your PayPal address anywhere on that form. Could you please just send me your mailing address so I can send a check off to you for payment?"

OMG... I started laughing so hard because it was obvious that this woman hadn't bothered to read the terms at all - not on the auction page nor on the checkout. I had to email her back that I was sorry, but I do not accept either forms of payment & could she please choose from one of the following: c2it, eBay Payments, Yahoo Direct or a money order.

Do you know she had the nerve to try to tell me that she was just going to send me some PayPal anyway & I could open an account to accept it? GRRRRRR!!! I had to email her immediately to tell her that no, I would not be accepting it so would she please be so kind as to check out one of the other services if she'd like to pay online.

After 10 minutes of me waiting thinking that this crazy person was going to send me the PayPal anyway, I get a notice from c2it that she's paid me there. And another email from her saying that if I wanted payment from one of these alternate sources, why didn't I just say so in my auction or in my checkout?

LOL!!! I have it in text on both, nice big old logos in my auction to click on (which she must have followed because I got the affiliate payment ), and I also put it in the personal email I send at auction end.

The only thing I can think is that she must have mixed my auction up with someone else's. At least I hope that's the case, because if not, then I'm scared of this woman!

Hmmmm...that's a possibility I've never thought of. I usually have 20 or 30 auctions going at the same time on the buying side for many similar items....(in addition to the myriads I'm watching and all of my listings) so sometimes I may get confused about the terms...(although I always check back and I always print out a copy of the auction)....

Although, it seems to me that by not taking any kind of "paper money" ie. checks, money orders, cashier's checks...that this limits people bidding...for instance...although I DO have a credit card, becuase of my past history with paypal, my bank does not allow ANY internet charges AT ALL. I don't want people with access to my bank account so telechecks and whatnots are not possible (and if they had a dotcom address, they wouldn't be allowed by my bank anyway) and the fact that I don't wish to have a paypal or ebay payments or a yahoo account has no correlation to my "creditworthiness". I generlly prefer to pay by personal check and COMPLETELY understand that there will be a hold on my items until the check clears. If that is not acceptable, I prefer money order. I will even go so far as to fax a copy of the money order made payable to the seller when I get it. That way, at least the seller knows that I've GOT the funds (can't buy a money order without it!!) and that it is being mailed.. Of course, they have to trust me on that part!

But lately, I've had people insist that I FEDERAL EXPRESS overnight the money order!!!- HELLO??? When the accept money orders, they shouldn't then ask for it to be overnighted at a substantial cost.

Bottom line, I think that you're right, with all the different terms of sale for each auction and the fact that EVERYONE has different ideas of what's good/bad, you will sometimes get confused people....

Another thought....it also seems to me as a buyer that sometimes (no fingerpointing- I haven't checked out anyone's auctions from this site) people's auctions have SOOOOO much on the page (dancing graphics, music, 25 pages of terms, jokes, family pix, etc etc. etc...) sometimes I get caught up in actually trying to FIND the terms!! Maybe people should try to keep their auctions less of a "personal note" and more of a "business transaction".

They want you to OVERNIGHT a money order to them? LOL!!! Now I know I'm not the person you bought from because I'm pretty nice about following eBay's rules for payment (contact within 3 days & payment within 10 days). I always figure that if you're sending a money order, then you'll probably mail it out in 10 days so I don't even say anything until 14 days have passed.

I also don't understand the people who will only take electronic payments. Even though about 90-95% of the people pay online, I don't want to totally alienate those who wish to pay with more "traditional" payments. But, after receiving a bad check & having to pay my bank for the privledge, I decided that it was either money orders or cashiers checks only. (Although, I did bend this rule for someone with 1500+ feedback - I figure she didn't get those postives by being a cheat!).

I have had the same happen with sellers..

I have paid for things right away...or the same day, only to have no contact from the seller for 3 or 4 days. Or They won't e-mail to say when something is shipped, so, I have no clue when to expect it, and a few things have taken 2 weeks to recieve....after I have been told they were shipped & the post mark date isn't even close to when they claim it was mailed. As a matter of fact....I won a pair of tennis shoes 2 days ago, and I am still waiting for the seller to contact me with a total because I want insurance & it's not listed on the total. So, it's not just buyers that are slow or bad, sellers are giulty also.

yep i can't tell you how many times i've already done the payment through paypal and don't hear a word from the seller until 4 or 5 days later...i agree, sellers can be guilty also...i guess it just depends on the person...some watch their auctions like a hawk (like me lol) and others get to it when they get to it...i like to buy from the SERIOUS ebayers...before i even bid on at item i'll email them with a question just to see how long it takes for them to email me back...if it's quick i bid..if not...oh well...

Rolling eyes ebay buying and selling

I do much more buying than selling on ebay. I sell more on Yahoo because it is so cheap there, so it is a better way to sell low priced items (except you don't get as many bidders...).

I think the type of sellers often has to do with the category of products. I deal mainly with sportscards which is usually a business or veteran collectors doing the selling. (Along with my Mountain Dew collecting fetish). I have not had too many problems on either end, but then I am very patient also. Recently I sold a hockey card and didn't get payment for 3 weeks from the guy (it was only $2). But I had read his feedback and a couple had hinted at his 'laziness.' I really don't care if I get the money in 10 days or 30 days as long as i get it in time to get my fees reversed by ebay if the buyer doesn't pay (and it hasn't happened yet). I forgot to pay someone once for a couple weeks and apologized. They didn't freak and give me a neg. yet I see people posting on eay forums and elsewhere complaining that they haven't heard from someone and it's been 3 days (etc...) I've seen people get neg. feedback even though they emailed and said payment was on way because it wasn't done within the '10 day period' and that is ridiculous!

I agree that more payment options should be given, I will take anything in the mail and YahooPayDirect or Paypal on line, so there are your options. My BIGGER gripe is the high postage and 'handling' fees charged by about half of card sellers. Most are from $1 to $2, but a few are $3 or $4 for just mailing a single card out. Ludicris!!!! One guy was selling some 'jersey' card and had $8 postage and handling charge. Was he delivering it in person????? I just don't bid if I don't like their PAYMENT options or POSTAGE fees. Even if I really want the item, I'll find it eventually somewhere else...

TB

I agree with this. Some auction pages are too confusing and way too cluttered. I don't need a cutesie teddy bear background with strolling banners and all kinds of that crap. Just the facts m'am!

As a seller, I'm pretty relaxed on my payment terms. If my auction ends on a Tuesday, and they want to pay me after they get paid on Monday, I'm okay with that. I know how it can be. I figure if a person isn't going to pay, it doesn't matter what my terms are. If a person intends on paying, I can be flexible.

Sometimes it's hard to get a payment out in 7 days, especially if they only take money orders. I never have cash on me, so first I have to find time to get to the bank for the cash, then get to the post office to buy the money order.

Deadbeat bidders drive me nuts, and that's the sucky part about selling.

I just had a guy use "Buy It Now" on Friday for a $55 item. No word from him after Ebay notification or PayPal invoice, so I copied the PayPal invoice to him and asked nicely if he needed my address to send a money order.

Got this answer Tuesday:
"I apologize. With teenagers in the house, I am hardly
able to get on the computer at home. I do most
browsing and e-mail from work when I have the chance.
This payment will be sent via paypal. Thank You"

Now it's Thursday and no sign of the $$. Why didn't he "Pay It Now" when he used BIN? Why didn't he pay for it while he was online Tuesday sending me his excuse? Why am I bothering to ask these questions?

I'll be lucky if I see the money from this idiot.

Ugh... I'd request the deadbeat's info from eBay. You know, 90% of the time when I do that, they suddenly "remember" that they need to pay me and the money shows up in the next 24 hours.

The only drawback is that then they have your contact info - but I usually send along a little note after I request their contact info & sending a "reminder to pay" letting them know that this is just the first step in a NPB alert and that no harm will come to their account if I receive the money in a timely manner.

I figure if I haven't heard back from them in 14 days, then I need to start the process so that I can get the things relisted & my money back in the same month.

Wonders never cease. I usually handle it similar to Kat -- a series of nicely worded but increasingly strong reminders. Today was my first mention of "Non-Paying Bidder" process and whaddaya know -- payment achieved this afternoon!

Meantime I had sold, been paid for, and shipped FOUR other items while waiting for this fellow to step up... people!

I had had a few problems, but not many. Most of the time people pay through paypal and I have no problem.

However, I have had a problem with a few people saying they sent a MO and 2 weeks has passed and no MO. I email them back usually and they say, "Well, I sent it!". Yeah right!!!! Then they say they will do paypal or send another one and if I get the first MO then send it back. Well it turns out I never seem to get that first MO, even after the second one arrives.

Also, one buyer had the nerves to bid on my auction and then email me a question. So I was like o.k what does this person want? Come to find out she asks me if she wins can I accept a cheaper amount? I'm like what? I email her back and tell her if you didn't have the money then why did you bid? She says that she just thought that maybe I can give her a better deal. It all worked out in the end since someone else won the auction but I just couldn't believe that she did that.

Ebay is cool to sell at but I feel that the seller is charged too much in the end. You have to pay listing fees for items that most of the time don't sell, and then a final value fee is applied and it's always going up. If you wan't to accept cc, you have to pay all types of fees in paypal, and sometimes you end up trying to charge all those extra costs in shipping. I try to not do that, but with all the fees it is impossible at times.

As a matter of fact....I won a pair of tennis shoes 2 days ago, and I am still waiting for the seller to contact me with a total because I want insurance & it's not listed on the total. So, it's not just buyers that are slow or bad, sellers are giulty also.
I have had GREAT experience for the most part...I had to create a new username and such because I never did get the email to change my password thru eBay..which is ok really since now I am Mouse7088 there also..easier to remember..LOL! I bid and won an auction Oct. 2, purchased a MO on the third from the Post Office and mailed it from there as well. I finally emailed the seller last week just to "check" if he even got the payment. His response "yes I got it and your cards were shipped last week"....uhhhhhh no cards still and there wasn't an insurance option either. He wrote me yesterday saying if I didn't get them in a few days he would send out another box of cards (Anne Geddes Christmas cards)...I appreciate it, really I do, but I wish he would have let me know when my payment was received. He's also the person at the beginning of our communication that said he would leave feedback after I received my cards...well...THIS time I don't think it's fair..I took care of my end of the deal in more than just a timely manner while who knows what is going on with his. He also mentioned a few times he doesn't know what goes on with the PO because he's had many problems with items being delivered to winners..I wanted so badly to say "first off try walking them into the post office!" LOL! I know I sound nasty, I understand when stuff happens, heck I sent crazytimes (here at DOD) a MO that should have been made out to an eBay seller and vice versa..I contacted both of them and they were great, I sent crazytimes the difference and the eBay seller is sending me my "change" w/ my item..no biggie and as embarrassing as it was, I emailed them as soon as I had gotten home. It took a whole couple of minutes to apologize for my dorkness and let them know what to expect. I realize some of the eBayers have a LOT of auctions going, but maybe they shouldn't be so overwhelmed if they can't actually take a minute to say "Hey, got your payment and will be sending out your item on such and such date."

I agree, Mouse - how hard is it to send an email letting people know that their package is on the way?

You know, both PayPal & eBay say that you're supposed to send trackable mail. Yet, I'd say that 90% of the stuff I've paid for online doesn't come with any way to track the package and the one time something went who knows where, the person didn't bother and blamed ME for the post office not delivering. My postmaster couldn't even trace the shipment because this person had no proof they'd mailed it to me and of course, then they got mad when I went to PayPal to get my money back. What else was I supposed to do? I still don't have the stuff and it was supposedly sent to me months ago, so it's probably sitting somewhere in the dead mail place to be auctioned off. I don't know why people don't understand that insurance does NOT cover non-delivery unless it's traceable, otherwise it is the SELLER'S responsibility to get the package to you. Delivery confirmation covers the tracing part & it's free if you print out a Priority Mail label (I used to do it this way until my printer started acting dumb) - otherwise it's .45 for Priority or .55 for other mailings. I use it on EVERY package I send via USPS & do email the buyers when I ship.

Then again, I'm also getting so tired of how long it takes for the USPS to deliver payments that I'm about ready to stop accepting money orders. The last one took over a week and it wasn't even coming from very far away!
