Target return policy changed again???

Got a call today from a friend who went to Target last night to make a return. She had her reciept so it wasn't an issue, but the woman right in front of her was having a heck of a time.

It appears that their new policy is you have to have a receipt. This woman did not have a receipt and the manager told her the options were for her to keep it or get something of the same value or more from the SAME department it came from.

That means you cannot exchange sheets for shoes, a telephone for kids clothes, etc. So if you get an unneeded Target toaster for Christmas, you had better know what other kitchen appliance you want to exchange it for.......glad I did very minimal Christmas shopping at Target!

Boy! I do love Target, but Wal-Mart is sounding better every day!!!

Target used to be my store of choice. Now It isn't. As a matter of fact I have visited them only twice this holiday season and bought very minimally from them. I used to go to Target once a week. Their loss I quess~~Debbie

Ugh! ...had a similar experience at Target and am very disappointed. My daughter rec'vd some Target brand (clothing and a watch) items for her birthday, without a receipt. She wanted to exchange them for something else. The reply was - sorry! Your only choice is to keep them - new policy.

If you're purchasing at Target, be sure to get "gift receipts" when you check out to incliude with your gifts.

Don't they only give you 1 gift receipt? If you are purchasing several gifts would you need them to be rung up separately?

I had bought a baby outfit for a family for xmas as a donation and this post made me realize that I didn't ask for a gift receipt to put in the box with the clothes. If the outfit doesn't fit, it will be useless...

Yep, they only will give you ONE gift receipt. If you need others, you'll have to ring them in separately- just don't try to do it!!.

I know 'cuz I was thrown out of the Nashua NH store for doing exactly that. I tried to buy 7 items (3 CD's and 4 DVD's) at Target and asked for a gift receipt for each one so that my nieces and nephews could exchange them for others if they already had those titles (who the bleep knows what CD's and DVD's teenagers have/like???)

The cashier got miffed about this called her manager over and said that I was "harrassing" the cashier and I was asked to leave....mind you- I never raised my voice or said anything other than I would need a gift receipt for each one...she told me they wouldn't do that and that I would need to ring each up separately...I said no problem but the people in line behind me would probably not appreciate it very much...that's when she called the manger over and had me escorted from the store and was told not to come back. I'm serious- my husband couldn't even figure out what had happened- he didn't know why security was escorting me out and he was standing right behind me!

I gladly left that pit of customer service HE-double toothpicks and bought my gifts at FYE and Suncoast Video at the other end of the mall...they were more than happy to tell me that their return policy is that as long as it's not open, they could be exchanged for other titles - without a receipt.

I personally will never set foot in a Target again in my lifetime, I don't care if they are GIVING away things....Target can kiss my posterior parts!!

That's interesting, because I've been to Target twice in the last week, and both times I purchased multiple items and both times I was asked how many gift receipts I needed. Sounds like they need to standardize their policies, or at least the stores implementing them.

I wonder if they would accept a photocopy of the gift receipt?

Yes. I bought five items, and needed three gift receipts. The cash register printed all three out at the same time as my own itemized receipt.

I would have been FURIOUS!
I can't believe they did that! I tell you what, I think I would go to Target corporation on this one. I would demand an apology and some GC would be nice too, even if you never want to step foot in their store! Good luck.

Yes, they can either give you gift receipts for a single item or for your whole purchase. I think if you want a receipt for a single item, they need to know before they ring it up. If you don't mind getting a receipt for the whole purchase, they can print up as many as you need at the end.

The gift receipt for the entire purchase somehow references your entire purchase in the system (each item isn't listed out individually on the receipt).

Target also says that they can look up the purchase by credit card number. NOt sure how or how well that works.

I don't like their policies either - I wanted to exchange some target brand socks for the same socks in a different time and they gave me a really hard time. Don't see what the harm is in exchanging for the same item different size, but they did.

Anyway - gift receipts are the only way to go anymore.

Sheesh! That is awful! Yes, calling corporate would be a good idea. That's grounds for unlawful something or other. hehehe

I guess Target doesn't want you to do all your shopping there.

Hmmm, I can't imagine taking all the time choosing 7 different gifts and then leaving with nothing in the hands of security. I probably would have cried!

I heard they were able to do this with the numbers at the bottom of your checks, too, if you paid this way. But it sounds like they are no longer doing that, either. My friend said the item the woman was returning was not a gift, but she had lost her reciept and not really given any options.

I personally have not had any problems with Target, but the first time I do will be the last time I shop there!

As for the gift receiots, I will surely be asking for one for EVERY gift I purchase there, to be rung up separately if need be. I would hope that anyone behind me in line would have a problem with this (although it wouldn't be to anger other customers) so they would complain and complain and complain and maybe Target would see how ludicrous their new policies are!!

And SkyeJaz, I would surely contact corporarte about your experience!

I had a bad experience recently at JC Penney portrait studios, but didn't say anything to anyone but family and friends. When urged by a friend I decided to go to their website and send an email telling them the situation. I gave my home phone number in the email and asked to be contacted. When the customer service representative contacted me she was so nice, gave me some free pictures and then mailed me a gift certificate for future pictures. So it can be to your benefit!!! TRY IT WITH TARGET!
