Don`t shop at HOME DEPOT !

I had a very lousy experience with Home Depot customer service policy! They and they do not go out of their way for their customers. Their slogan "customer satisfaction guaranteed " is bunch of I took back a couple of items with no receipt an dthey gave me a gift card, explained to them i wanted cash. they wouldnt do it ..what the difference, a gift card is like cash. Tried to purchase the same items again on gift card and return them , got another gift card. Argued with store and corporate for ever. They gave me a number to call to ask for a duplicate receipt ...got the run around, then they tell me duplicates arent any good for returns..so what the point. Anyways ended up selling card to someone in exchange for cash. Dont shop at Home Depot ...their store

Uhhh, it's a very normal policy for retail stores to offer a gift card when items are being returned without a receipt. I haven't ever had a problem returning things to Home Depot. I think you were lucky to get a gift card. If you don't have a receipt, how can you prove you purchased the items there?

I too have received gift cards from Home Depot when returning items, but I kind of expected it because I had thrown my receipt away, assuming I knew what I was doing, when actually I bought the wrong item. I have no problem with it.

I think it's great they are so relaxed with returns. We keep a bag in the laundry room and collect the returns from projects that need to go back. We then take everything back the next time we are headed there. It's been months sometimes and they don't blink- you can always save the card for the next time you need something or go buy some flowers for the yard.

Lowes has the same policy and our walmart to, but it does not bother me to get a gift card because I know I will be buying something soon anyway Especially with no receipt I would not argue.

If they were so confident with their products and services they would refund the entire amount in CASH. If Walmart does it, its because they know the customer will come back regardless. I bought a window Air conditioning unit at Home Depot which was pre-opened. The reason; It was the coolest a/c in stock and I was desperate (Blazing Hot climate) to purchase one ASAP. Either way, I paid full price for it and when I came home I noticed the remote control was missing. I asked the clerk to initial the receipt of purchase as an acknowledgment that the unit was pre-opened. I purchased the 2 year extended warranty and they didn't have pamphlets to activate it. They did charge it though. I bought some extra installing material as well and since one of them didn't have an item number it took 30 minutes for dispatch to find the price.The price they figured was $7.99 for a piece of Ply wood I saw advertised at $4. Being in such a hurry I absorbed the cost and got out of there quickly. The online survey you're asked to take is worthless. People including myself who have brought complaints to Home Depot's attention did not get replies.

Gift cards are great. You have no receipt - standard store policy.

There is another reason for the gift card, other than you have no receipt. Without a receipt, any store has no way of knowing whether you paid cash for the purchase or whether you charged it. If you charged it, you wouldn't be getting cash back - you'd be having your credit card credited for the amount of purchase.
Also, without a receipt, a store has no way of knowing how long ago you bought whatever you wish to return. And they all have a return policy as to how long you can keep a product after it is bought and still return it.
It's SOP (standard operating procedure) for stores to issue gift cards (if you get them at all), without a receipt. So in that respect, Home Depot is no different than most other stores.
Just a suggestion - Ask at the courtesy counter of anywhere you want to make a purchase that you're not sure of - find out what their return policy is and then there won't be any surprises. Good luck,

WOW your home depot is like ours Their customer service is BAD! We have spent thousands of dollars in that store due to remodeling and fixing our 5th wheel. They dont help you find anything or help you with your needs. You can also ask for assistance and they dont ever show up or if they do, they just tell you where its at and dont take you to it and when you get there its no where in sight to only find out it was 4 isles down. We also bought to many boards and tryed to get our $200.oo back with our reciept, which we told the salesperson when we bought them we may not need all of them but wanted to make sure we had enough because we live an hour away, and she gladly said just bring back the reciept but what did they do--gave a gift card and thats not what we wanted,all we wanted was our money back! Now I've got to try to find something I want at that store.

yes, i do not like home depot either. I have heard A LOT of stories of people buying things with cash and even credit cards and home depot is forcing them to take gift cards instead of refunding original method of payment and that is not right. I would want my cash back so I can have the option of finding something elsewhere and they are trying to take that away.

One thing about Home Depot, Walmart and stores like this - they are primarily "self service"; in Home Depot, the aisles are marked with what is in them, like a grocery stores are.
Also, even with a receipt, you only have a certain amount of time to return an item - if you exceed that time, it's at the stores descretion not to take it back at all or to issue a store gift card.

If an item is returned within the set time for refunds and if the store even issues cash refunds - I worked for 15 years managing a store that did not "ever" give cash back and it's always posted in their return policy, usually
on the wall of the store, in more than one place - Home Depots is as well. They do give cash-back, "within a certain time period" of buying the merchandise - just like most stores. If you went over the time period, they will not make the exception, they have to stick by their policys too. My point to all of you who are not satisfied with Home Depot and yet still shop there, is don't!

I agree, and gift cards from stores always make nice "gifts" for someone you know that's starting a project or a garden.

Well I shop at home depot because its the only place to get remodeling items in our rinky dinky town--which I still live an hour away!
For the most part they are pleasant people, but their service is lousy! self-serve or otherwise. I do love their OOPS paint they sell for $5.00! I have bought at least $100.00 worth this year. They usually have all different colors and you cant beat the price on good quality paint!! I was just e-mailed by a man whom has had roof repairs done by this store and they did over $1000.00 damage. This was back in March and no sign yet of their fixing the problem. I think I would find me a good lawyer! My heart goes out to you. I did talk to the better business bureal about them not giving back $200.00. And it was within 30 days! They are doing an investigation and getting back with me. I'll let you know what they decide.

Their OOPS paint is great, it's always quality paint, and for the price, you can't go wrong. Please let us know what the BBB tells you, I had to file a report with the online version, and had it all fixed within about 2 days.
The person who e-mailed you, I'm afraid I was responsible for deleting his two posts - there were reasons why I did and also invited him to re-post them correctly. Apparenlty he chose not to, oh well....
I'd forgotten all about the OOPS paint! Thanks for reminding me, and they really do have ALL kinds of colors
