Angry Whatever happened to good ol' fashioned customer service?

Went into the downtown San Diego store of Office Depot yesterday, looking to buy a new monitor. Was totally ignored by everyone except one salesman I had to practically tackle and hogtie to get him to see if a certain model was in stock. Then, he turned and walked away while I was in the middle of a question about a different model. I waited, but when he didn't return, I asked another salesman "What happened to the guy that was here?" I was told, in an irate tone, "This isn't his section; it's mine, but I'm with a customer." Excuse me? Granted, I was dressed in jeans and a t-shirt rather than a dress and heels, and yes, I know he had no way of knowing I had $500 in my pocket, but c'mon!! Since when do people start ignoring and snapping at interested, prospective customers? I left without a word, ignoring a cheery "good-bye" from the guy that had walked away from the the first time. It felt like they couldn't get rid of me quick enough. Their loss, though. I bought a monitor a few block away, at a place that was more than happy to let me examine the merchandise and was very helpful in their answers to my questions. Needless to say, I won't be subjecting myself to Office Depot's "better-than-you" attitude again.
