Angry Maytag Washer & Dryer

Two years ago I replaced my washer and dryer. I decided to spend the extra money and get the 'Maytag' name since they have such a great reputation.

Well two years and at least 3 repair jobs later, my opinion of Maytag has changed! A couple of months ago, I had to replace the motor in the dryer. Grrr

I say this as the seals in the washing machine (which I have already paid to have replaced once) leak yet again on the basement floor!

Jill,
Sorry to hear about your problem with the washer/dryer.
I have a Maytag dishwasher and one reason I bought it was its reputation for quality. But several parts have broken during the 8 years I've owned it. I'm really disappointed with it and would not buy Maytag again.

Hi Jani.

It seems as if everyone I talk to who has bought a Maytag product recently is disappointed.

Apparently they are not made the way they used to be...

It's a shame we found this out after our purchase!

Re: Maytag Washer & Dryer

My Maytag washing machine doesn't spin the clothes out very well at all.
It always takes forever for them to dry in the dryer because they are so heavy with water.
I can never get my laundry caught up.

BTW mine is only a year old.

Re: Maytag Washer & Dryer

I just replace my Maytag washer after a mere 5 years. The timer went out on it, and the cost to repair it just wasn't worth it. For $100 more we just bought a new washing machine. No fun, and a real pain. I had full load of laundry(with the water) in my washer when the timer bit the dust. My poor DH had to syphon all the water out. Yuck

Re: Maytag Washer & Dryer

I bought a Maytag Neptune washer and dryer over a year ago. It's computerized and very smart and the washer uses very little water ... no mechanical problems yet ... but I HATE the way the washer wrinkles all of the clothes ... even with Downey, and on the 'wrinkle free' setting. I love the dryer, but I would never buy this washer again because of all the wrinkles.

(I had a Speed Queen washer for many, many years, and had no problems with it until it started leaking water out the bottom, and DH said it was old enough, to just buy a new one since he didn't have time to mess with it.)

Re: Maytag Washer & Dryer

Count me in as another unimpressed Maytag owner. My washer is not even 3 years old and we just replaced the pump. I could have bought 2 or 3 used washers for that and had them last a whole lot longer.

Re: Maytag Washer & Dryer

I'm grateful for learning to beware of Maytag ! We had Sears machines last 12 years, repaired the Washer once. Decided to replace the set. Sears again, and Thank God I had held on to the old Washer. The new Washer barely saw 2 years. Mr.Fix-It here bought the Sears Repair Manual - itself a disappointment as it cover some 10 year spread of machines, so good luck finding information specific to what you bought (of course). My years of repairing items from A-Z at home and back in my working days counted for nothing on this beast. And I have repaired/rebuilt automobiles, vcr's, small appliances, medical x ray equipment plus I used to write pre-install prep, installation, maintenance/repair service, and spare parts technical manuals. I eventually pushed the old Washer back in place, hooked it up, and it's been running fine. So now we will avoid Sears and Maytag next time around !

I have the Neptune also and did have a major problem within 3 years of buying it. It was a chunk of money to pay for the labor, but Maytag did supply all the parts.Just an FYI-go straight to Maytag when in need of repair. I made the mistake of calling Sears where I bought the thing and $65 later the repairman basically said I would do better buying a new one. ????? His estimate for repairing it was almost the cost of a new one. As disappointing as that experience was, I still love this machine and wouldn't go back to a top loader-ever.

Addressing the wrinkling problem...I have only noticed bad wrinkling in jeans when they twist in the overloaded washer. Other wrinkles always come out in the dryer. Make sure you're not putting too much in the washer. That's the only time I have had problems. If you are going to air dry something, try using the "delicates" setting to avoid wrinkles.

Thanks for the tips! I don't overload the washer because I hate wrinkles almost as much as I hate water spots. You're right, the jeans do wrinkle badly, and tee shirts, underwear, dress shirts, everything wrinkles very badly, even after drying them in the dryer. Only socks escape this malady. I should try the 'wrinkle release' Downey, though. Maybe that will help. I am very disappointed in my Maytag Neptune washer because of this. You'd think they wouldn't release a machine that will be so maddening to their customers, especially for as much as they cost. I absolutely hate to iron.

Re: Maytag Washer & Dryer

Well now I am even more unimpressed. A $90 pump last week and I just had to call because now I have water all over the floor. It better not cost me a dime or the repairman might not leave with all limbs intact......

Re: Maytag Washer & Dryer

Maytag also now owns Amana. We have an Amana refrigerator that is only a little over 4 yrs old, which we paid over $1200 for. There was a leak in the coolant system, which then blew out the compressor. The stuff leaking out stuck to the seal on the door and tore that off too. The compressor was still under warranty so that they paid for, but not for the door seal. That was over $200. However it took over 3 weeks for them to ship the parts. In the meantime we had to go buy a new one. With 7 people in the family you just can't go that long without one. Needless to say it was not Maytag or Amana that we bought. When I called Customer Service, they told me they suggested in these situations that you buy the extended warranty. What a joke. They kept telling me that it is a manmade appliance and you can't expect it to last forever. However, for that kind of money I do expect more than 4 years. The food from the refrigerator and freezer that had to be thrown out was just ridiculous. Oh, and of course it happend the day we were having a birthday party for 2 of the kids with over 35 people. Was that fun. So, stay away from Amana as well as Maytag. I now know why the Maytag repairman is lonely, it isn't because their stuff doesn't break. it's just they don't do anything about it.

Re: Maytag Washer & Dryer

Seven years was all I got out of my Maytags.
Now I have GE, and so far they have been great.
No problems in the 3 years I've owned them.
