I have learned that petco treats it's small animals (ferrets, gerbils, etc.) poorly. If one of these animals that are for sale, becomes unsaleable, due to illness or any other cause, rather than sending it back to the breeder, getting vet care, or even letting a shelter take the animal, petco puts the offending pet into a sealed plastic bag and then sticks the bag into a freezer, for the animal to suffocate or freeze to death, whichever comes first. Please join us and others who disagree with this procedure by no making any purchases from petco until they change this policy and if possible let the management know why you are not purchasing from these locations. This info came from our ferret shelter director, who was told by a former petco manager. The shelter now has a suit pending against petco for this policy.

Please forgive me if this is in the wrong section...

That REALLY bothers me since I fell in love with an adopted a guinea pig from them...it became ill and I was told to bring it back to them. I did, but the manager would give me no time frame as to when a vet would be able to treat my piggie.

Now i know why....

Let me preface this post by saying I'm a former breeder of pure bred dogs (NOT for profit, that's for sure!!). I also showed, trained in obedience and field work. I cry during Animal Planet specials. However, this post is vague in that "I HEARD..." and a friend of a friend of a former employee..., etc., etc.
I do not currently live in a city that has a Petco; however, I would strongly advise before believing such a post, to check out your particular Petco & see it for yourself. I, for one, am totally against selling ANY kind of live animals (birds, small mammals, dog, cats, etc.) in ANY kind of pet shop.

I decided to check this out myself, and for what it's worth, you can go the [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now] and they have multiple reports of this kind of treatment at petco. As for purchasing animals in a pet store, we have a petstore in our mall that has dozens of pedigree puppies and kittens and the conditions there are just nauseating, not to mention twice the price of what you would pay at a breeder. I guess the people that purchase them must not be aware that you can get pets locally through breeders for half the price. It makes me wonder however, who polices these types of stores.....We have a local humane society which because of budget restraints doesn't do much of anything (won't even take in strays anymore) But we don't have a local ASPCA. Just another indicator of what a sad world we live in for creatures great and small.

2catz1 - if you're trying to get ppl to believe what you say, please don't include a link to Peta (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.) I have absolutely no respect for an organization that protests and tries to save rats, or sits naked in boxes on the street (both of these, I know, are outrageous things that they have done, for causes w/ no basis whatsoever, but it shows how stupid and ignorant they are. Don't even get me started on why they should all be crusading for the outlaw of abortion - it's a shame when people try and save animals, which live and die everyday and it doesn't matter to them one bit, and kill babies wantonly.) Include links to places that actually have RESPECT attached to them, and then you might win some ppl over to your cause.

tschmitt.....I don't think your nasty reply was necessary...If you had read my post correctly, I said FOR WHAT IT'S WORTH,,,,I checked into the first post of this thread and for anyone who is interested in this is where they can read further. FURTHERMORE...if you continued to read my post you would have seen that I was talking about our local pet store in town which has nothing to do with peta. I AM NOT, NOR DID I IMPLY that I was an advocate for the above organization, I was just reponding to the topic in hand and for you to accuse me of doing so when you don't know me or my beliefs if not only wrong but your tone was just mean.

And by the way, I am not trying to win people over to any CAUSE...I'm just a homemaker, mother of 3, and a deal seeker like everyone else, who just happened to look into the original post and i'm very sorry I did.

Wow- I agree that the post from tschmitt was unfairly hostile toward the poster when it seems to me that the real anger is at PETA.

Your opinions about PETA are welcome but to attack the poster for simply mentioning their website was uncalled for and rude.

You obviously fee strongly against PETA but your views would be better received (which I assume is your intention) if your aim was directed at the right target.

hmm...It would seem people on this board lack skills in understanding sentance structure. 2catz1 - just so you know, I was railing against PETA the whole time - never once said that you were representative of the organization. Only told you that if you wanted ppl to agree with you, you shouldn't metion organizations (and then I explained the reason why I felt PETA was a bad one to mention.) Sorry if I offended you, but that was not the intention of the post, nor was it what the post said. If everyone would read my post again, they would see that I did not attack 2catz1 - I just made a suggestion. I was even nice about it! (I used the word PLEASE.)

Ya know, 2catz, if you sit back and read tschmitt's post, it doesn't seem like he's being rude to you - just making a suggestion. Maybe he didn't intend for it to come out like that...or maybe you're taking it wrong? Just thought I'd throw my opinion out there too, since everyone else is chiming in

Maybe i'm being overly sensitive, but the last sentence in the post was..."Include links to places that actually have RESPECT attached to them, and then you might win some ppl over to your cause."

So the bottom line was that I was being told what links to use or not use (Moderators decision isn't it?) not to mention implication was that I was trying to win people over to my cause...WHAT CAUSE?

And that's about all I have to say about that.

Rolling eyes

There are two sides to this "coin". For example, here's a link to a news story about one Petco being cited for animal abuse (note, the citation was not for what the original poster was talking about). [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

This next article talks about Petco (and other stores) donating large quantities of food, toys, and other merchandise to animal shelters. [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

The PETA site is unreliable at best. The original post smacks of urban legend-ism.
