Unhappy

Really, is it fair to talk about how moral and wonderful this board is by trashing others?

I know that there were only a couple of posts expressing such negativity, but I am genuinely upset by some of the things said. I think this is a great place to look for deals, but face it, there have even been a couple here that weren't what they seemed. This has nothing to do with the integrity of the mods or posters. No board is perfect and I don't think the mods allowing broad generalizations of people as rude, greedy cheaters helps the cause of moral superiority. By responding to these comments, I am sure I am furthering a point that I don't want to make, that if you bash someone else, you can get lots of responses.

I hope this topic inspires the response that we are a good board, but in being a good board, we don't need to trash others. I won't post this thread on Almost Shoplifting and wouldn't expect their threads to be discussed here. Let's keep it clean

Being one of those "negative" posters you referred to, I feel I should post an explanation here.
First, the thread you're probably referring to was under General Chit-Chat. Specifically it was started with someone asking about Almost Shoplifting's web site. Both posts were answering the original poster's question of what people thought about the AS site. So the reaction was hardly unjustified- the original question wanted people's opinions on Almost Shoplifting, and, good AND bad, that's what was posted.

Second, I can't speak for the other poster, but I certainly didn't mean to promote DOD's "moral superiority". I was just warning people that they could expect to see a lot more open nastiness at a site where the moderators (if they even have them) don't mind posts that personally attack other posters. Yes, I was going by what I saw in the actionace.com thread, so you could consider this a case of generalization, but I don't. If it happened on one thread, unchecked, who's to say that it's not happened in the past, or won't happen again in the future?

You seem like a nice person, Barb, and I'm not saying there aren't nice people over there, but, as I said over in Kudo's and Compliments, I'm just glad we've got moderators over here who stop that negative kind of posting from showing up.

I'm not disagreeing with your reason for posting, just trying to interject another point of view.

I was involved initially in the "ActionAce" thread over there, when I saw how quickly it was degenerating, I backed out of it and didn't add to it. I don't agree with the scamming posts and don't contribute to them. It upsets me as well, but I have learned the hard way you can't change people's minds about it. I try to do my thing quietly and in the spirit of helping people like me find great deals. I wouldn't normally have commented at all on the Chit-Chat topic, but as a member of both boards, it bothered me to see myself classified as a crazy, greedy and rude because I post at Almost Shoplifting.

I do think the mods here do a terrific job keeping things cool and calm. But sometimes hot and crazy has benefits too, which is why I take what I like from all of the places and try not to get too involved in what I don't like. I just don't want to see this board turn into the kind of place where we encourage people to complain about others. We can leave that to the other places and comment on it there.

I think it is a measure of how great the mods here are that we CAN comment on other places; it's not always allowed elswhere. But just because we can, it doesn't mean we have to. The moderator at Almost Shoplifting (and right now there is only ONE since this is his new board and he's just getting going) is a pretty nice guy who tries to let us all have our opinions. Believe me, the ones involved in the flaming can all take care of themselves. In that ActionAce thread, I hope you could see that the nature of the posts was meant to inflame.

Enough said on my end because I am someone who tries very hard NOT to inflame and I feel very badly when I'm not able to express that. All I was saying was that you can't criticize someone who flames by flaming them yourself. So let's leave A.S.-ers to yell at each other and keep DOD nice and safe for all.
