2 issues please help?

The other day DOD was down for about 12 hours. Mayor posted why. Ever since then I'm not getting any email notifications for subscriptions for threads or pm notifcications. I checked all my options/etc and everything looks to be in place.

On another note, I wish I could help people figure out why they aren't able to post attachments. I'm not the only one. What happens after you browse for the attachment is you see it's listed, and click add attachment and the link that is supposed to forward to a new post just disappears in mid air. In other words, there is a script error that doesn't make the next page go forward. What happens is the page goes back to where you were originally which is the place where you'd go to Manage Attachments.

Something wrong in the script. I've tried it using IE, MyIE, and Netscape.

Re: 2 issues please help?

Toby Lee,

The attachment works fine for me. I'm using IE 6.0.28 with 128 bit encryption & XP Pro. As I posted in GCC, my daughter had a problem trying an attachment with Netscape but when she switched over to IE 6.0.x, the problem went away.

Which versions of the browsers are you using & which OS? Obviously it's some kind of compatibility issue but without all the info, we can't figure it out. Perhaps if everyone who says they're having this problem gives both their OS & browser (including the version), then hopefully we can track it down.

Re: 2 issues please help?

Hi Kat, I'm more interested in why all email notifications have stopped since the day DOD was down last week. Can you help on that first please.

I'm using IE6 and WinXP Home. But that isn't it on the attachments, because I've tried it with IE, MyIE and Netscape.

Let's get the email thing straightened out first please. Thanks!

Re: 2 issues please help?

I'm sorry but I have no idea why you're not getting email notifications. I have mine turned off so I don't know what the issue might be since I never see them.

I will post a note to have someone look into the email issue but am also trying to get DETAILED information for the techs so that maybe they can figure out the attachment problem that seems to be hitting more than one member.

I agree Toby-not getting e-mail notifications either-so it makes it real easy to miss posts(replies) to fellow DOD'ers. Attachments work fine with me-using I.E. Explorer 5.5 with Service Pack 2.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who isn't getting email notices.

It's nice to know I'm not the only one who can't post attachments. I posted about that a long time ago and it wasn't addressed.

I'm sorry to be a huge PITA! lol But I do like to see notifications of threads I'm subscribed to.

Well I sure hope it get's some attention-just a longshot here, but it's possible our isp's are blocking them. I sent a email asking them to make sure my dealofday.com email's are getting thru. BTW-I don't consider it PITA-the world needs people who are willing to speak up.

Re: 2 issues please help?

I did call my ISP and they block nothing. lol Many months ago I called them about the possiblity they would get some spam blocking in and they said it was in the picture but not for a long time.
So, I bought I Hate Spam which they walked me through maybe 6 mos ago.

I had to install my own spam/email blocker and they walked me through which one worked with them and with Outlook Express. I just checked to make sure my Spam Blocker has DealofDay as a friend and yes it's on my friends list and is not on my enemies list. Though that was a good place to start MrB.

Not what's causing it to not come through.

Mayor, this email stop started when DOD had the downtime of about 12 hours. After that, no email notifications - but prior to that downtime I was getting tons of emails a day because I post all the time! lol Well, I was posting a lot because of a certain member who shall remain un-named. Anyway, all joking aside I like to keep abreast of all threads I'm subscribed to. Thanks for checking into it.

I'm not getting e-mail notices anymore either. Glad it's not just me! I thought something was wrong with my ISP!

Re: 2 issues please help?

(I'm also posting this on the thread in GCC)

I think I may very well have a cure for your picture posting problems. Since it seems to be a time out problem, you can try to fix it by adjusting the MTU setting on your computer (this will allow for connections that have longer ping times). I'd suggest setting it to 1400.

If you are using a router, you can change the MTU settings there. If not, you can change your settings with the free tool from DSL Reports called DrTCP. It does not install itself on your computer, just click to download and choose open. Set the settings and save. This changes mtu on your pc not at your router. Check it out here: [Only registered and activated users can see links. Either login above or Register Now]

Hopefully that will fix it!

Re: 2 issues please help?

I'll be happy to change the MTU, but is that going to change anything else on my computer's performance levels. Right now, the MTU is at 1500. If I lower it will that affect my performance at other sites?

Re: 2 issues please help?

On second thought, if DOD is the only place I'm having problems with timing out, then why would I want to change my MTU settings? It's odd to me, that this only happenes here, and I don't have a problem with lost packets or timing out anywhere else? Can you enlighten me please? TIA!

And, what's up with the email notification status? Is it being worked on. So far me, Pip and MrB have reported problems... I'm wondering how widespread it is other than us. TIA again!

Re: 2 issues please help?

Lowering the MTU will NOT affect the way your computer connects to other websites. All it does is give a website that you're trying to get to a little more time to connect. It is recommended that your MTU be set at 1450 or 1400 to keep websites from timing out (the higher the number, the less time it gives your computer to connect). Why some are set at higher rates, who knows? I know that when I checked our Windows computers here, some were at 1400 and one was at 1550! I'm not exactly sure why some people time out & others don't but it's most likely due to the way the net is configured and which hubs you're going through - think of it as some connections being on a direct highway in & others having to go through a traffic jam on their way through. Unfortunately, there is no way to reroute the net, so giving it a little more time to connect can only help (and those websites that don't need it, just won't use it).

On the mail thing, I cannot say what is going on, when it will be fixed, etc. As Mayor stated, it IS being given attention but mods are NOT techs, so there's not much I can do there besides forward the problem to their attention.

Re: 2 issues please help?

I'm wondering if it times out at DOD because DOD takes so much longer to load than any other site I visit ever on the web. All other sites are instantly loaded and yet DOD takes a long time.
