That's why it's suggested that the MTU be set to between 1400 & 1450 - to keep those connections that are either on busier hubs or are just slow to connect from timing out. Like I said, we have multiple computers on our home network and when I checked them, the settings were anywhere from 1400 to 1550 (the higher the number, the faster they time out).
I couldn't connect at all to a different website last week - a place that I had never ever had problems with. After trying to pinpoint the problem and doing tests from both their end & mine, one of their techs suggested lowering my MTU (I had to do it on my router instead of a single computer though). Instantly I was able to connect again, instead of hanging & then timing out.
Since it worked there, I figured it might work for you as well. The symptoms of hanging, hanging, hanging & then timing out are exactly what I had on this other website - and since lowering the MTU, I've also noticed the side benefit of the pages there loading faster.
