No Wonder There Is Spam!!!

I have reported dozens of posts over the past several weeks that contain referral links and links that would generate revenue for the original poster.

These have ALL been within the Internet Deals Forum.

After talking with several members from DOD who are also irritated by this - it was agreed that I would use this forum to respectfully point out the problem and possible solution.

The problem is that people aren't respecting the forum rules.. and also the problem is that the three moderators, Jenimadison, Verwon and Netwrx - are rarely ever on these boards doing moderator functions. Hey - we all have things going on in life - and I'm not faulting them for it.. by all means.. do whatya gotta do.

What I am saying is that all 3 of these mods - who are nice enough people - seem to have other things going and they can't be there to police the forum.. this is obvious. Why not either split them up into other forums where other mods are available more often and thereby minimizing the noticability of their absences or perhaps bring on a couple other mods who want to do the job and have the time to do it?

Again, I'm not trying to burst anyone's bubble or insult any of you. But, I will be floored if you can honestly say you are in that forum policing it frequently.

Anyhow, not trying to cause any trouble but rather bring to light some comments and suggestions that I have along with a few other members and to bring it forth in a polite fashion.

Thanks.

Thanks for bringing that up, Jeff. Personally, I'm tired of policing the signature lines of members that have their personal avon, tupperware, amazon, etc. link in there. Here is the deal:

No self-promoting links are allowed on the boards. PERIOD.

The only exception is on the From the Merchant Mouth board.

And it would be great if ALL the mods could help out with this.

Thanks for the quick reply, Luv. I hate to put the burdon on you because you are on here all the time as are a few others and I don't want to add to the amount of unnecessary work for you guys.

I haven't been paying attention to the sig lines.. it's all been in the Internet Deals forum in actual posts - specifically by a select couple of members.

Jeff, I try to be on as much as I can, when I catch stuff, I catch it...I personally get pretty sick and tired of people complaining about the "mean evil mods"....i am not trying to be mean or evil, i am just trying to do the job I was elected to do....

but that's a COMPLETELY different tangent altogether....

anyway, i hear what you are saying, and while i will not speak for other people as I am not there in their life, i will say that i do support the job they do while they are here to do it, disrespect to the moderators here is becoming a common practice and i'm REALLY getting fed up with it. if a mod has asked someone to stop doing something or locks or moves that person's post it is because it violates the tos of DOD period. it is not a personal attack on anyone. it's the rules.

jeff, you have my personal email address and my aim name, if you see me signed on and catch something that i don't just im me or email me, and i'm on it

You know, I was wondering about that, seeing personal links in sig lines. I didn't THINK that was allowed, but I don't know much about rules. And whether it's in the sig line or in posts, I'd think whoever is posting them WOULD check the TOS before posting.

Steph and Luv, don't worry about being a 'meanie mod.' It's just like being a mother, which both of you are also. Mom always has to be 'the enforcer,' and feels like everyone hates her, but in the end, it's she who keeps it all going and also who gets the 'Hi, Mom!' when the camera is on.

Thanks for all that you two do, and the other 'active' mods, too. DOD would be NOWHERE without you.

I had noticed quite a bit in that forum lately...frankly, I don't go there so much anymore because of it. Good points, Jeff.

I think there definitely needs to be a "re-distribution" of forums among the moderators...maybe those three don't even WANT to be mods anymore?!?! It's not right to have to go to one of the other forum mods and REPEATEDLY point out "booboos" in forums that aren't really their "responsibility". I know that things happen and ppl. go MIA for awhile, it's not necessary for the members to know why or when another (mod) isn't going to be available, but you'd think it would be common courtesy to let their fellow mods know so everyone can be prepared...maybe a toggled post at the top of the forum could even be added telling the members which mod(s) they can contact during those time frames when the "regular" mod(s) are going to be unavailable....especially when it's ALL of the reg. mods. Just my two cents of course.

I think Jeff definitely said what I have been thinking for a while. I don't fault those mods, but if they can't be there than definitely get someone else or switch them around so the job gets done.

I don't mind reporting threads , but a day later and nothing is done really gets to me. These people (whether innocently or not) posting their links are walking away with DoD $$!

I am not referring to the signature links either. I don't mind those because I think we all know that those are that person's business and we can give them business if we want..or not. The links within the post are the ones that need to be controlled. We click on those thinking we are supporting the board not the original poster!

Whether it is right or not, I usually check the page where members who are online are listed. If there is a mod on board I send them the message hoping they will get it and act right away. I wouldn't do that if there were mods available in the internet forum. Isn't that the most important forum anyway? the bread and butter of the website?

As long as I'm venting about this...when are we going to figure out the linking for the board? I would like to post links that will generate money, but that issue hasn't been resolved yet and I'm wondering why I am putting so much energy being concerned about it if noone else is?????? Many of the links in the alphabetical listing are no longer valid or don't have any identifying codes...

Please do not think I am knocking any mods. I am not. I wouldn't do that job if they paid me. lol It is a tough job and I am sure they get more headaches from it than not. We just need "someone" doing that job in that forum...for the good of the board!

I have posted a zero-tolerance announcement on the forums and re-aligned mods a bit to make this work better. Thanks for bringing it up!

The thing that has me puzzled is that I have not received one report about any of this. I think something is wrong with the Report This Post to a Moderator button. Do those notices only go out to the moderators of that forum possibly?

The only reported posts I ever seem to get are from the Found a Freebie forum, but I'm a moderator there so that may very well be it sandypandybat...Mayor, can we fix that so it goes to everyone? I can justify checking email at work (clients have to use my cox.net addy sometimes because our work email goes down alot) but i can't justify 'sitting' on the board like i used to so this would make it alot easier for me to just click on the link pop over move/delete/whatever and then get back off without getting caught LOL

I think a test needs to be made and all mods in on it. The test should be one regular member is picked (perhaps one of the guides) to report a posting and for all mods to report back to whoever is in charge of the test - within ONE day whether they got the "report this post to moderator".

I know Telos has complained that no one paid attention when he reported stuff. And the claim from the mods was that they received no report. I wonder if there's a hiccup in the system?

For example this post by Kat: "All fixed. For some reason, the "Report to a Moderator" still doesn't come to my email with any great regularity ....<snip> ...."

Also, if certain mods seem to be inactive for lengths of time, why not do a clean up and appoint new mods. I know many of us are here daily. The internet is our third arm and we're here along with any of the other places we haunt.
