My wife was granted Social Security disability benefits last April, retroactive to May 2004. She received a lump sum payment of about $28,000 which I understand is taxable - at least in part. The problem is that she was receiving taxable interim disability through her employer while the Social Security process was ongoing and after the SS payment, about $18000 was reimbursed to the employer. Is there a way to adjust the lump sum payment for the reimbursed amount (on which taxes were paid in previous years)?
Thanks for any help you can give.
