I'm a Benefits Administrator so I know all about this stuff. Momof3girls, it just sounds like his employer only pays a small portion of the monthly premiums, leaving the employee to pay the bulk of it. My company pays 80% of the monthly premiums for the employees, but a family plan still runs our employees about $350 from their pay. And that's only 20% they are paying! Heath insurance costs are getting out of hand. Our company pays about $7 million a year in insurance for our 1600 employees.
Remember that $650 is probably taken from his check pre-tax, so there really is a huge advantage there. When you take that into consideration, it's probably like he's actually only paying $500 a month for the coverage (which is still a lot, I know!)
