| Re: Fired U.S. Attorneys Felt 'Leaned On'
Question of the day; If the Attorney General fired the guy who fired the US Prosecutors, because, according to the AG, "mistakes were made," why is AG Gonzales steadfastly standing by last December's seven US Prosecutor firings?
Timing is everything in life; From the wire dispatches; "In an e-mail dated May 11, 2006, [Kyle] Sampson urged the White House counsel's office to call him regarding "the real problem we have right now with Carol Lam," who then the U.S. attorney for southern California. Earlier that morning, the Los Angeles Times reported that Lam's corruption investigation of former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham, R-Calif., had expanded to include another California Republican, Rep Jerry Lewis."
As we all know, Cunningham is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence in Arizona. Lewis has not been charged with any crime. Lam was forced to resign.
Note, I saw the latest Republican talking point memo (distributed to pundits and conservative talk radio), the first tidbit is "Clinton fired all 93 US Prosecutors in 1993." Difference; This administration did their dismissals in 2006 not a year in which a new party came into the White House. Whenever a new party comes in, new Presidential appointments are made. The US Prosecutors know this and expect this to happen. They know at the beginning of a new administration they are more than welcome to submit their names for another political appointment. However, a mid term "cleaning house" has, until now, been unheard of.
But hey, the President's Latin American trip went so well; at least give him that!
Rock On!
