Kpickell, I was just at the post office yesterday. I asked them about this!! They said the only difference between first class and priority was .05 cents!!!
They're half right. For heavier items (one pound) it isn't cost effective to ship them via First Class. What they didn't tell you is that heavier items mailed via bookrate (special standard mail) are shipped as fast as first class. So, you can mail a 4 ounce CD via first class for $.99 or via bookrate for $1.14 or via priority mail for $3.20. You can ship a one pound book via first class for $3.15 or via priority mail for $3.20 or via bookrate for $1.56. Priority mail gets it there faster, but only by about 2 days.

But I should say, that if you're included any personal letters, as you would to a family member perhaps, then you can't send it via bookrate. Bookrate (now known as "Special Standard Mail") is only for shipping merchandise.

Anyways, call me cheap, but I'm still saving money shipping via bookrate and first class. ;)

Having said all that, this is great for those people who ship via Priority Mail.
