Make a swag for your doorway Measure the doorway, purchase a spring loaded curtain rod with the rubber tips on the ends, you can find the rod at a Wal-mart. Double the amount of fabric you need for the swag or topper, your choice and have the fabric store cut that much for you. Pin your fabric, make a casing at the top of your fabric, sew it closed on your sewing machine or by hand, then hang your swag or curtain topper on your curtain rod in your doorway, towards the top of your doorway. This will soften a doorway which is too square or too tall. I'm making one to match my curtains with off white and burgundy check fabric. It's a simple, fairly inexpensive way to decorate on a budget. The price for my fabric and thread was just $17.00, but I'm sure you can do better if you can find your fabric on sale.
