In answer to #1: Does your local newspaper have a website where you can lookup articles about the fireworks shows? That's how I looked it up for my area.

www.bookadventure.com has a place to search for books at a certain reading level. I haven't played around with it too much. It may also have a place to look up a certain book and see its level.
