Vinegar will help with odors. Just put some in a bowl and let it sit. Also for musty damp basement smell you could try that activated charcoal.? Not sure where to buy it, but that is supposed to help, too. If that is the smell she is talking about, you might have to get rid of some things to truly get the smell out. Cardboard boxes , books, paper...they tend to have that odor.
